    OPHTHALMOLOGY - Laser correction

Laser correction of vision is replacing the traditional approaches (glasses and contact lenses).
Laser correction of vision is the safest and the most efficient technique to treat short-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism. It is currently used in over 500 centers worldwide. More than 4 million patients were able to forget about glasses and contact lenses after laser surgery improved their vision.

Laser correction of vision at Oculus Medical Center in Lviv

At our medical center we offer vision correction surgery in line with the world’s best standards. Vision correction surgery is performed using the state-of-the-art equipment. For the cost of laser treatments and laser correction of vision please click Pricing.

Correction of vision using laser is quick, and the effect will be immediate! Our patients start seeing well immediately after the professional laser correction of vision at our clinic, their eyesight returns to normal within a week, and most importantly, the results are life-long. Laser correction of vision will help you have your great eyesight back. The procedure will bring back the clarity of vision and diversity of colors, while eliminating the need to wear glasses or contact lenses once and for all.

Important information for patients getting ready for surgery is provided at the bottom of the page under Articles link.

Quality of laser procedures is fully dependent on the equipment used.
Decades of research by Alcon, the world’s leading manufacturer of medical ophthalmological equipment, resulted in development of the fastest ever excimer laser Wave Light EX500. Its high efficiency is ensured by the WaveLight® algorhythm, and its quick laser head induces less dehydration of corneal stroma, is less sensitive to eye movements, making the procedure more comfortable for the patient and ensuring the optimal results.
In our clinic we perform laser surgery using the only WaveLight EX500 device in the Western Ukraine.
Cutting edge technologies ensure best results and grateful feedback from our patients!

Advantages of LASIK vision correction surgery:

    – Lasts 10 to 15 minutes, with laser exposure not exceeding 30 to 40 seconds
    – Painless procedure of vision recovery (topical anesthesia applied)
    – One-day surgery, hospital admission not required
    – Minimum duration of recovery
    – The patient can see well immediately after laser correction, and it takes a week to regain normal vision
    – Predictability of results (result of laser correction can be predicted upon assessment

2.1. Laser treatment for diabetic patients (diabetic retinopathy)

Retinal laser photocoagulation is the standard of care for diabetic retinopathy. Usually 3 to 4 procedures are performed at one week intervals. If needed, retinal laser photocoagulation may be repeated. Quality of laser procedures is fully dependent on the equipment used. Our cutting edge laser Iridex IQ 810 (USA) is the first of the type in Ukraine, supporting both the conventional and MicroPulse modes of laser photocoagulation. This feature is of utmost importance in treatment of macular edema – the severe complication of diabetic retinopathy. Macular area is the most vulnerable and the most important part of the retina in terms of vision. Laser photocoagulation of this area can only be performed in the MicroPulse mode. This is a unique feature, enabling us to perform the procedure without a slightest tissue damage. The Iridex IQ 810 device in our Oculus clinic in Lviv is the only one in the Western Ukraine.
Laser photocoagulation of the retina stabilizes the process in 80% of cases. This procedure significantly decreases the risk of complications requiring surgical treatment.

    2.2. Peripheral retinal photocoagulation

There is a number of conditions causing degeneration of peripheral retina. This part of the retina is very thin, therefore retinal tears occur frequently, which may lead to retinal detachment and loss of vision. Peripheral laser photocoagulation of the retina is required to prevent this. Within 2 to 3 weeks a scar forms in the coagulated areas, which helps set boundaries of the problematic area and prevents the said complications.

2.3. Delimiting laser coagulation for retinal tears

Sometimes a retinal tear can be revealed by ophthalmological examination. Typically these are due to conditions, which lead to significant thinning of the retina (shortsightedness, peripheral retinal degeneration, etc.) or due to eye injuries. These tears are very dangerous, as they are likely to cause retinal detachment and loss of vision, and therefore should be treated. The procedure consists in laser photocoagulation around the tear. Within 2 to 3 weeks a scar forms in the coagulated areas, which prevents the leakage of intraocular fluid under the retina, thus preventing retinal detachment. In our clinic in Lviv these procedures are performed using the cutting edge laser Iridex IQ810 (USA), currently the only such device in the Western Ukraine.

2.4. Focal and local laser photocoagulation of the retina

These procedures are typically performed in our clinic for the following indications: central serous chorioretinopathy, diabetes mellitus, central retinal vein thrombosis. Central serous chorioretinopathy is when fluid from the choroid layer leaks under the neurosensory retina through a defect in the pigment epithelium. Fluid build-up leads to detachment of retinal neuroepithelium, causing deterioration of vision. At our clinic we use two modes of laser treatment for serous chorioretinopathy: conventional mode, and MicroPulse (available with the Iridex IQ 810 laser, USA). This is a unique feature, enabling us to perform the procedure without a slightest tissue damage, and thus to ‘close’ the defect in areas, where a conventional laser cannot be used because of the risk of vision deterioration. If needed, the procedure may be repeated. Focal or local laser photocoagulation of the retina is reserved for cases of mild diabetes or central retinal vein thrombosis with limited ischemic areas on the retina, which do not necessitate panretinal photocoagulation.

    2.5. Laser trabeculoplasty

Laser trabeculoplasty is performed in order to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma. The technique implies application of laser energy to trabecule in order to improve aqueous humor drainage. At our clinic we use two modes of this procedure: conventional mode, and MicroPulse (available with the Iridex IQ 810 laser, USA – currently the only one in the Western Ukraine).

    2.6. Transscleral laser cyclophotocoagulation

Transscleral laser cyclophotocoagulation of the ciliary body (the area producing aqueous humor) is performed in order to reduce intraocular pressure in terminal painful glaucoma. Laser destroys ciliary body cells, which produce intraocular fluid. Resultant reduction of intraocular fluid production leads to decrease of intraocular pressure. The procedure is performed using the cutting edge laser Iridex IQ 810 (USA), currently the only such device in the Western Ukraine.
